The nearly Zero Energy Hotels -neZEH- is a project co-funded by the European Commission in the frame of the Intelligent Energy Europe Programme, aiming to accelerate the rate of large scale renovations of hotels into nearly Zero Energy Buildings (nZEB) by providing technical advice to committed hoteliers and demonstrating flagship nZEB projects in the European hospitality sector.

The conference neZEH 2016 will introduce the main challenges faced by the industry in the transition to nearly zero energy hotels, debate to what extent a deficient implementation may hinder the efforts of the sector and explore contemporary business and economic growth defies and solutions to overcome these shortfalls, including what neZEH is doing to help in the transition.

Morning Session: Becoming Nearly Zero Energy…Get started!

Inauguration and Discussion panels (11:00 – 14:00)

The morning session will focus on presenting the two of the main steps to take into consideration when engaging in a neZEH project - the rollout plan for the renovation and financing. The session will debate with neZEH pilot hotel, experts and public on how to overcome the gaps, what pioneers are doing.

Afternoon Session: Innovating for the Accommodation Industry 3.0 - we all have a role to play

Discussion panels and Conclusions (15:30 – 18:30)

The neZEH partners will present what the initiative is doing to help the accommodation industry to become more efficient and environment-friendly – introducing the neZEH e-toolkit – and expects to shed some light on what is already being done, where to look for help and call the attention to the potential new market for the technologies producers. Experts and the public will debate possible solutions to ensure adequate information is available – such as awareness and sensitization campaigns of hotel owners, staff and clients; actions promoting the benefits of investing in becoming a neZEH – how much attention is being given to the matter and the spill-over effects these can have.

UNWTO Silk Road Tour Operators Forum - 'Profiling Asia on the Silk Road'

Commercial interest in the Silk Road region has grown considerably over recent years, with historical connections between Europe, the Middle East and Asia being re-discovered and revitalized. Stronger economies, improved infrastructure and connectivity, advances in information technology and enhanced mobility are creating new and exciting opportunities for tourism. This is especially true of the Asian section of the Silk Road, a region home to a great number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites which in 2013 totalled 248 million international tourist arrivals.

According to UNWTO’s long-term forecasts on the performance of individual regions, the Asian market will be growing at an average of 5% per year and reach approximately 535 million tourist arrivals by 2030. Concomitantly, its overall global market share will increase to 30%, cementing, herewith, the tourism sector’s importance for the region in terms of economic stability, sustainable growth and inclusive development.

Taking this into account, the Silk Road Tour Operators Forum aimed at the following:

  • To assess the performance and profile of some of the destinations driving the region’s growth by drawing on the extensive knowledge and experience of stakeholders operating throughout the region
  • To assess how this knowledge and added value can be used to benefit the Silk Road tourism brand and concept
  • To build new alliances and partnerships between the public and private sector by giving stakeholders the opportunity to showcase their products and discuss relevant issues

As a complex network of routes spanning over three continents, the success of Silk Road tourism relies heavily upon the ability of tourists to cross borders. This Meeting brought Ministers of Tourism together to discuss how Silk Road countries can advance the visa facilitation agenda in 2014/2015 and beyond. At the meeting, UNWTO released the results of its latest visa facilitation report on Silk Road countries and ministers exchanged experiences and strategies for facilitating visas across the regions.

Travel Facilitation and the Silk Road: Why is it important?

UNWTO´s latest Tourism Visa Openness Report shows that between 2010 and 2013, a total of 44 destinations worldwide facilitated the visa process for citizens of 20 or more countries, translating into 6,000 improvements of visa requirements. Many countries and regional blocs have advanced visa facilitation policies by implementing regional agreements, outsourcing visa processing, issuing visas on arrival and establishing e-visa systems.

Yet in spite of these significant advances, on average two thirds of the world’s population still require a visa prior to departure. Restrictive visa issuance policies and complicated entry formalities continue to stifle travel and tourism growth, particularly from emerging economies. According to recent research by UNWTO and the World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC), supporting visa facilitation will help stimulate the economy and generate employment - as many as 5.1 million additional jobs in the G20 economies by 2015, and 2.6 million new jobs in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) economies by 2016.
