5 March 2019 UNWTO Secretary-General Opens ITB Berlin 2019: Tourism Offers Resilience in Uncertain Times
Madrid, Spain, 5 March 2019 – Tourism’s coming of age puts the sector in a position of global responsibility to face up to challenges ranging from climate change to social inclusion. Furthermore, toruism’s growth unlike almost any other economic sector offers the economic and social resilience needed in times of uncertainty. This was the central message delivered by Zurab Pololikashvili, Secretary-of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), during the opening ceremony of ITB 2019 in Berlin, the leading travel trade show of the world.

The Forum is supported by the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism of Spain, the Basque Government, the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa and the City Council of San Sebastián, a city that has hosted the Forum every other year since its first edition, in 2015.

1 February 2019 Córdoba Tourism Agency Obtains UNWTO.QUEST Certification
The Córdoba Tourism Agency (Agencia Córdoba Turismo) has received the World Tourism Organization’s UNWTO.QUEST Certification, whereby the specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and accessible tourism for all, promotes the strengthening of the institutional capacities of destination management organizations (DMOs) and public-private integration in destinations.

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the Basque Culinary Center (BCC) have signed the Agreement for the holding of the 5th UNWTO World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism (San Sebastian, Spain 2-3 May 2019). The new edition of this global forum is supported by the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism of Spain, the Basque Government, the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa and the City of San Sebastián.
25 January 2019 First ever UNWTO/IPSOS Survey – Citizens recognize the positive impact of tourism
Madrid, Spain, 24 January 2019 – According to the first ever global survey conducted by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and IPSOS, 47% of respondents think ‘they live in cities with a high number of tourists’. Over 50% considers tourism has a positive impact in generating wealth and promoting cultural exchanges, and 49% feel there should be measures to improve tourism management. Only 12% of respondents favour limitations to the number of visitors.

24 January, Madrid, Spain - Refundit, an Israeli startup, was declared the winner in the final phase of the 1st Global Tourism Startup Competition, organized by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and Globalia, and held within the framework of the FITUR International Tourism Fair, topping 3,000 entries from around the world.
