17 June 2019 United States moves closer to re-joining UNWTO with high-level delegation at Executive Council in Baku
Baku, Azerbaijan, 17 June 2019 – The United States of America has highlighted its support of tourism as a driver of sustainable development. A high-level delegation of the Government attending the World Tourism Organization Executive Council announced that the US is exploring the possibility of re-joining the UN agency responsible for the promotion of responsible, sustainable and accessible tourism.
14 June 2019 UNWTO and Barça Innovation Hub Launch Global Sports Tourism Start-up Competition
Madrid, Spain, 14 June 2019 – The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in collaboration with Barça Innovation Hub (BIHUB) and with the support of the Qatar National Tourism Council (QNTC), has announced the launch of the 1st UNWTO Sports Tourism Start-up Competition. The initiative is designed to identify projects and innovations that can transform the sports tourism sector in the near future.

6 June 2019 Exports From International Tourism Hit USD 1.7 Trillion
Madrid (Spain), 6 June 2019 - Exports generated by international tourism reached USD 1.7 trillion in 2018, a 4% increase in real terms over the previous year, a new report from the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) shows. For the seventh year in a row, tourism exports grew faster than merchandise exports (+3%), reflecting solid demand for international travel in a generally robust economic environment.

3 June 2019 UNWTO/IPSOS Global Survey – Local Residents Remain Largely Positive to Urban Tourism
Madrid, Spain, 3 June 2019 – A global survey conducted by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and IPSOS shows a positive picture of local residents’ perceptions towards urban tourism. Looking at 15 countries worldwide, the research also identified what residents consider to be the best ways of managing rising numbers of tourists, highlighting differing attitudes to urban tourism among different socio-demographic groups.

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the Japan Travel and Tourism Association (JTTA) and Gurunavi have released the new UNWTO Report on Gastronomy Tourism: The Case of Japan. The publication includes 18 different case studies of successful gastronomy tourism in Japan.

Vatican City (Vatican), 23 May 2019 – The Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Zurab Pololikashvili has met with Pope Francis at the Vatican. During the private audience, Mr Pololikashvili expressed his gratitude for the Holy See’s commitment to eradicating poverty and promoting peace and intercultural dialogue, both central themes of UNWTO’s mandate, and outlined his vision for the role tourism can play in job creation and sustainable development.
