3 January 2017 The Year Ahead: harnessing the power of tourism to build a better world
Dear friends, I write to you as I begin my final year as UNWTO Secretary-General, a position I have been privileged to hold for almost seven years at an Agency I have been proud to serve for the past decade. During this time I have seen tourism become one of the world’s most important and impactful socio-economic sectors of our times. I have seen its growing relevance to the lives of millions around the world, to the preservation of our common values and to greater understanding among people of all walks of life.

12 months to celebrate and promote the contribution of the tourism sector to building a better world. This is the major goal of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development 2017 that will start in few days. 
27 December 2016 Poland to host 3rd International Congress on Ethics and Tourism: promoting shared responsibility
Coinciding with the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development to be celebrated throughout 2017, the third International Congress on Ethics and Tourism will be held in Poland, on 27-28 April 2017. Organized by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in collaboration with the European Commission (EC) and the Government of Poland, the event will focus on the shared responsibility of all stakeholders in promoting a more sustainable tourism sector. 
20 December 2016 UNWTO presents the 3rd UNWTO World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism
The World Tourism Organization Headquarters in Madrid, Spain, hosted yesterday the presentation of the 3rd UNWTO World Forum on Gastronomy Tourism. The event will be held in Donostia-San Sebastian, Spain, on 8-9 May 2017.

14 December 2016 Ambassador of Ghana presents credentials to World Tourism Organization (UNWTO)
The Ambassador of Ghana, Elisabeth Adjei, has presented her credentials to the Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Taleb Rifai, accrediting her as Permanent Representative of his country to UNWTO. UNWTO is the United Nations specialized agency for tourism and is based in Madrid, Spain.
14 December 2016 UNWTO and the European Travel Commission address Crisis Communications in the tourism sector
The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the European Travel Commission (ETC) have co-organized a working session with European countries to discuss crisis communications in tourism. The event was held at UNWTO headquarters in Madrid.

UNWTO is deeply saddened by the news of the crash of the Pakistan International Airlines in the Northern part of the country. On behalf of the international tourism community, UNWTO conveys its heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the victims as well as to the Pakistan people.
9 December 2016 UNWTO highlights the relevance of sports events in branding Africa
With occasion of the 12th edition of the African Women Cup of Nations 2016 (November 19- December 3), the Secretary-General of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), Taleb Rifai, has paid an official visit to Cameroon. Participating in the ‘Women, Sports and Tourism; Women Sports events and the promotion of African destinations’, UNWTO Secretary-General underlined the opportunities that women sports-related events bring to the tourism sector in the Africa and beyond.
9 December 2016 University of South Florida’s Patel College of Global Sustainability, the newest member of the UNWTO International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories
The Blue Community Observatory hosted by the USF Patel College of Global Sustainability (PCGs) of the University of South Florida, USA, has become the latest member of the UNWTO International Network of Sustainable Tourism Observatories. This Observatory monitors the impact of tourism in parts of the Pinella and Manatee Counties, two popular tourist destinations in Florida.
