The 20th Session of the UNWTO General Assembly unanimously approved the designation of Mr. Pascal Lamy, former Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), as the new Chairman of the World Committee on Tourism Ethics.

Countries call for closer tourism and air transport policies at the UNWTO General Assembly
The General Debate of the 20th Session of the UNWTO General Assembly has put a spotlight on the link between tourism and air transport policies. Countries attending called for closer coordination between both policies highlighting that too often these interlinked sectors are dissociated (Victoria Falls, Zambia/Zimbabwe, 28 August).

Mexico and Burkina Faso official hosts of World Tourism Day 2014 and 2015
Mexico was selected to be the official host country for World Tourism Day (WTD) 2014 and Burkina Faso for WTD 2015. The respective themes will be “Tourism and Community Development” for 2014, and “One billion tourists, one billion opportunities” for 2015.

International tourism demand exceeds expectations in the first half of 2013
International tourist arrivals grew by 5% during the first half of 2013 compared to the same period of 2012, reaching almost 500 million, according to data just released by UNWTO. Growth was above the projection made at the beginning of the year (+3% to +4%) and is also exceeding the trend of the UNWTO long-term outlook Tourism Towards 2030 (+3.8% a year).

6th UNWTO International Meeting on Silk Road Tourism shows the value of cultural routes
The 6th UNWTO International Meeting on Silk Road Tourism highlighted the increasing interest in developing cultural routes associated with the Silk Road and succeeded to raise the profile of tourism along this emblematic route. The event was jointly organized by UNWTO, the China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) and the People’s Government of Gansu Province (1-3 August 2013, Dunhuang, China).

An extra 12 million international tourists in the first four months of 2013
A total of 298 million international tourists travelled worldwide between January and April 2013, 12 million more than in the same period last year according to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. Prospects for the current tourism peak season remain positive with some 435 million tourists expected to travel abroad in the May-August period.
