14 December 2017 Southern and Mediterranean Europe, North Africa and the Middle East drive tourism growth through October 2017
UNWTO World Tourism Barometer Destinations around the world welcomed 1.1 billion international tourists between January and October 2017, according to the latest UNWTO World Tourism Barometer. This represents a 7% increase on the same period of last year, or 70 million more international arrivals. Strong demand for international tourism across world regions reflects the global economic upswing.
13 December 2017 UNWTO and European Commission address the significance of the TSA to measure the economic impact of the sector in Europe
    The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs (DG GROW) of the European Commission gathered national tourism policy makers and statisticians in Brussels to advance in the implementation of the measurement of the economic impact through Tourism Satellite Accounts.

2nd UNWTO/UNESCO World Conference on Tourism and Culture Over 800 participants from 70 countries gathered in Muscat, capital city of the Sultanate of Oman on 11-12 December 2017 for the Conference, an official event in the calendar of the International Year for Sustainable Tourism for Development 2017. 
11 December 2017 UNWTO appoints First Lady of Iceland as Special Ambassador for Tourism and the Sustainable Development Goals
H.E. Ms. Eliza Jean Reid, First Lady of Iceland has been nominated as Special Ambassador for Tourism and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The appointment took place at the second UNWTO/UNESCO World Conference on Tourism and Culture, an official event of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development 2017, being held in Muscat, Sultanate of Oman on 11 and 12 December. 
8 December 2017 UNWTO promotes the role of media as advocates of wildlife tourism
Nearly 30 journalists have convened in Kasane, Botswana to debate the role of the media in advocating sustainable tourism and wildlife conservation as its major asset. The event is part of the UNWTO/Chimelong Programme that promotes wildlife as key driver of tourism development. 
4 December 2017 UNWTO and UNESCO: tourism and culture to advance the SDGs
The 2nd Conference on Tourism and Culture convenes global leaders in Oman Global tourism and culture leaders and stakeholders will convene in Muscat, capital city of the Sultanate of Oman, next 11-12 December to discuss the relation between tourism and culture. The event co-organized by UNWTO and UNESCO is held in the framework of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development 2017 and follows up on the first World Conference on Tourism and Culture held in 2015, in Siem Reap, Cambodia. More than 20 Tourism and Culture Ministers have confirmed participation.
1 December 2017 Hello Kitty appointed as Special Ambassador of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism Development 2017
United Nations designated the year 2017 “International Year of Sustainable Tourism Development” and World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) (Headquarters in Madrid; Secretary General Dr. Taleb Rifai) plays a leading role to promote it. UNWTO and Sanrio signed an agreement that appoints Hello Kitty as Special Ambassador of the International Year.
29 November 2017 African tourism leaders debate the role of the sector as a tool for inclusive growth and community engagement
The Conference results in the Lusaka Declaration on Sustainable Tourism The potential of Tourism in poverty alleviation and to induce transformative change has been addressed in Lusaka, capital city of Zambia, in the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Conference on Promoting Sustainable Tourism, a Tool for Inclusive Growth and Community Engagement in Africa. The Conference, a flagship event of the Africa region for the celebration of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, took place last 16-18 November and was coordinated by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in cooperation with the Government of Zambia. 
29 November 2017 UNWTO and Les Roches Marbella open the debate on talent and the competitiveness of destinations
The Conference held in Marbella, Spain, is the continuation of two previous meetings held in Medellín, Colombia, and Bilbao, Spain, in 2015. In addition to presentations by experts in tourism training, the event included interactive sessions providing more than 200 participants with a unique platform to exchange ideas and experiences.
28 November 2017 Conference on tourism, jobs and inclusive growth opens in Jamaica
The Conference organized by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), the Government of Jamaica, the World Bank Group and the Inter-American Development Bank aims to set a new collaborative framework for tourism moving towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. An official event of the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development 2017, the events gathers 1500 participants and over 150 speakers in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
