The 2017 edition of the UNWTO & WTM Ministers’ Summit will focus on the following issues:

  1. With international tourists reaching 1.2 billion in 2016, and expected to rise to 1.8 billion by 2030, how can we ensure the sustainable development and management of tourism making growth and sustainability go hand in hand?
  2. What public policies and strategies can be designed to address challenges of congestion management and pressure on natural and cultural resources from tourism?
  3. How to foster the dialogue between the tourism and local communities to strengthen effective engagement and coordination?
  4. How to address the public perception of tourism as a “bad” sector?
  5. What is the role of the private sector and how to build public/private sector partnerships to promote tourism as an effective tool to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The UNWTO & Arabian Travel Market Ministerial Forum on Tourism’s contribution to sustainable and inclusive economic growth and diversification in the MENA region, brought together Ministers of Tourism and industry leaders in the MENA region to consider ways and means of capitalizing on Tourism growth in the region and building a sustainable ecosystem for the sector that would unlock its contribution to the fulfilment of their national agendas for GDP growth and economic diversification, innovation, entrepreneurship and productivity, job creation, human capital and infrastructure development, investment and export promotion.

The Forum addressed the following issues:

  • Empowering evidence based decision making and accurate measurement of the contribution of Tourism to current and future economic growth - particularly as regards GDP, jobs and exports - and its multiplier effect on other sectors of the economy.
  • Enhancing the contribution of domestic tourism alongside international tourism (especially intra-regional) in delivering sustainable economic growth from the sector.
  • Main challenges and opportunities for securing investment in Tourism (FDI and domestic investment).
  • Strategies and measures to strengthen Tourism’s resilience to external shocks.
  • Ensuring that economic growth due to Tourism leads to the sustainable and inclusive development of host communities and the transition towards a green economy.
  • Investing in technology - driven innovations to enhance performance and improve competitiveness.
  • Policies to promote job creation and entrepreneurship.
  • Strengthening the sector’s institutional framework, engaging and aligning key governmental role players on Tourism policy issues and targets and developing result driven partnerships with local and international stakeholders.

Addressing the challenges and seizing the opportunities

Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development and Chairman of the National Council of Tourism and Antiquities of the United Arab Emirates

The UNWTO & ATM Ministerial Forum on intra-Arab Tourism, to be held under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development and Chairman of the National Council of Tourism and Antiquities, will bring together Ministers of Tourism and industry leaders in the MENA region to discuss how to advance intra-regional tourism and seize the growing opportunities emerging for increased cooperation. The Forum will address the following issues:

  • What are the characteristics and specific requirements of Arab source markets (main segments, motivations and trends)
  • How to develop and market tourism products more effectively to Arab markets
  • How to promote travel facilitation and improve connectivity within the region
  • How to promote intra-regional investment in tourism infrastructure, facilities and services
  • How to set effective public-public and public-private partnerships to advance regional cooperation
  • How to enhance an institutional framework to implement, monitor and evaluate regional tourism cooperation strategies and initiatives
