At the kind invitation of the Entity of Tourism of Buenos Aires (Argentina), the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) organized a Technical Workshop within the context of the Joint UNWTO – WTCF City Tourism Performance Research, 26 September 2017 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Considering “Urban Tourism” as an economic activity with a high potential to stimulate local economic growth because of its complementarity with other economic activities, its contribution to GDP, job creation, foreign exchange and services exports, it is essential to monitor the tourism performance in urban destinations and to identify the areas related to “Destination Management”.

The UNWTO Secretariat in collaboration with WTCF (World Tourism City Federation) launched an initiative to showcase the good practices on “tourism performance” in several urban destinations. GLOBAL SUMMIT on CITY TOURISM:
Catalysing economic development and social progress
14 – 16 November 2012
Haliç Congress Centre, Istanbul, Turkey

Organized by UNWTO
On the occasion of UNWTO Affiliate Members Plenary Session

In collaboration with:
Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Turkey /
The Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB)

Background and Objectives

  • Tourism has become an element that can make a significant contribution to the development and rejuvenation of cities given its cross-cutting impact on the society and its effects on the many facets of the economic, social, cultural and territorial city life.
  • If correctly planned, developed and efficiently managed, tourism can be a catalyst for a vigorous economic development and social progress in cities by re-building infrastructure, generating jobs and a skilled labour force, stimulating local business entrepreneurship, developing strong public/private partnerships, attracting other economic activities, creating distinctive local attractions, building a service-friendly culture and promoting these advantages effectively.
  • Tourism destinations tend to use “innovation” as a vehicle for developing new products, addressing niche markets and upgrading the quality of their services and improving their competitiveness. Within this context, the concept of “smart cities” has been a key to success for many city destinations.
  • Cities must have a clear vision in maximizing the economic, environmental and socio-cultural sustainability for their residents while delivering a quality visitor experience to their visitors. They also need to recognize the changing global context for tourism and set new challenges and priority areas for action and go forward.

The summit aims to:

  1. Bring together the UNWTO Affiliate Members and other relevant stakeholders from the private and public sectors, academia and destinations to create a platform for dialogue on the current and potential challenges and opportunities for cities,
  2. Enable participants to acquire an overview of the current and future strategies for cities and build synergies among all the stakeholders for a shared vision,
  3. Build together a set of general guidelines which, by including integrated and relevant content, can be used as a reference for action by world cities.

16 April 2012 - 17 April 2012
Location:

The Mediterranean is one of the most important tourism regions in the world, accounting for approximately more than a third of total tourism revenues and half of international arrivals. For decades, the Mediterranean destinations have provided, along with other attractions, the traditional sun, sand and sea product, essentially for the North and Eastern European markets.  This part of the Mediterranean tourism is now experiencing a   challenge with subsequent market shifts towards other regions and alternative tourist products; the region has begun to lose its share of international travel market.
The Mediterranean countries need a shared vision to re-evaluate their tourism industries in the context of sustainable development strategies, begin to consider re-structuring their industries and increase efficiency and competitiveness, form strategic alliances for co-operative promotion and marketing efforts in order to maintain a competitive edge in the global tourism market.
Along with the economic crises in source markets, the on-going political changes in North African and the Middle East destinations have caused negative implications on the tourism sector and there is need for a new direction to enhance competitiveness.

Objectives:
The conference aims to:

  • Create a platform for Mediterranean destinations and all the relevant partners for dialogue on the current and potential challenges/opportunities facing the region’s tourism competitiveness,
  • Enable participants to acquire an overview of the current tourism policies and strategies and to discover how to build synergies for co-petition.
